BNET Business Dictionary

Business Definition for: Data Warehouse

  • a collection of subject-orientated data collected over a period of time and stored on a computer to provide information in support of managerial decision making. A data warehouse contains a large volume of information selected from different sources, including operational systems and organizational databases, and brought together in a standard format to facilitate retrieval and analysis. Like EISs, data warehouses can be used to support decision making, but the ways in which they can be searched are not predetermined. Organizations often use data warehouses for marketing purposes, for example, the analysis of customer information, or for market segmentation. Data mining techniques are used to access the information in a data warehouse.
  • a database in which information is held not for operational purposes, but to assist in analytical tasks such as the identification of new market segments. Data warehouses provide a repository for historical data and collect, integrate, and organize data from unintegrated application systems. The data stored in a data warehouse almost certainly comes from the operational environment, but is always physically separate from it.

Wiktionary Definition for: Data Warehouse

  • # computing a collection of data, from a variety of sources, organized to provide useful guidance to an organization's decision makers
