- work time when an employee is paid, but is not required to be at work. Leave takes several forms and includes time off for vacation. The number of days of vacation is agreed in the contract of employment and may be dependent on the employee's length of service. It may also take the form of sick leave, educational leave, or maternity or paternity leave.
