Business Definition for: Affiliate Program
- an advertising program in which one merchant induces others to place their banners and buttons on its Web site in return for a commission on purchases made by their customers. Also known as associate program.
There is no better example of the success of affiliate marketing than that of Amazon.com. The company has links on literally hundreds of thousands of external Web sites, linking through to its own site, from where it offers books and other products. It is a win-win situation: the external vendors can offer extra services to their visitors that are easy to establish, and receive revenue from Amazon. At the same time, Amazon opens up a new channel for marketing each time a new visitor links through to its Web site.
