an approach to organizational change that focuses and builds on the strengths and potential of an organization. The concept of appreciative inquiry was developed by David L. Cooperrider and Suresh Srivastva in the course of research into organizational behavior at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Ohio, in the 1980s. They maintain that a change of perspective, such as focusing on and asking questions about the positive characteristics of an organization rather than focusing on negative aspects such as problems, needs, and deficits, can inspire an image of what the future could be, mobilize positive creative energy and initiate a process of discovery and change within an organization. Appreciative inquiry has its roots in action research and focuses on organizations as social systems.
