  • the regular systematic gathering of information to monitor the effectiveness of environmental policies. An environmental audit now often forms part of an organization's environmental management systems, and is concerned with checking conformity with legislative requirements and environmental standards such as ISO 14001 (see ISO 14000), as well as with company policy. The audit may also cover potential improvements in environmental performance and systems.
