Business Definition for: Ooda Loop

  • a model of the strategic decision-making process, whose elements (observation, orientation, decision, and action) succeed each other in a continuous cycle, each informing and shaping the next. The model was developed by Colonel John Boyd (1927â€"97) of the United States Air Force, building on the work of military strategists such as Sun Tzu and Karl von Clausewitz. Boyd suggested that it was possible to outthink and outmaneuver the enemy by moving through the cycle with variety, rapidity, harmony, and initiative and by thinking inside the enemy's ooda loop. The concept has been applied to organizational decision making and corporate strategy as a means of gaining competitive advantage in changing environments.
