Business Definition for: Sticky Floor
- the factors which keep women in low level, nonmanagerial and support roles and prevent them from seeking or gaining promotion or career development. This term may refer to barriers to the advancement of women such as family commitments, attitudes, stereotyping, and organizational structures but has also been used to focus on circumstances where women are promoted but do not receive commensurate wage rises. It is most likely to be used with reference to women, though it may also apply to other groups of employees. The lead ceiling is a similar concept.

- Toyota appeals for second chance amid vehicle recall
- Toyota asked American car buyers yesterday to give it a second chance as it outlined plans to fix potentially sticky accelerator pedals in millions of recalled vehicles."I hope you'll give us a chance to win back your trust", Jim Lentz, president of the Japanese carmaker's US marketing arm, said in a YouTube message that was part of a media blitz to repair its reputation. The defective pedals have landed Toyota in one of the most serious crises in its 73-year history, involving a vast recall in the US and Europe and a sales freeze on some of its most popular models, including many Camry and Corolla sedans. Five Toyota assembly lines in the US and Canada have closed this week. The company said it had developed and rigorously tested a "simple, trouble-free" remedy that involves inserting a steel bar on the pedal assembly. The bar eliminates excess friction that can cause the pedal to stick. The same remedy will be used for recalled cars in Europe.Dealers' top priority will be to replace pedals on cars and trucks already on the road. This work is expected to start this weekend. The dealers will then repair vehicles in inventory."We are doing everything we can - as fast as we can - to make things right", Mr Lentz said. "It is embarrassing for us to have this kind of recall situation but it doesn't necessarily mean that we have lost our focus on quality."The actions announced yesterday, which involve 2.3m vehicles, are separate from last November's recall of 4.3m vehicles fitted with floor mats that are at risk of jamming accelerator pedals. Some vehicles have both problems and Toyota said yesterday that it aimed to fix both at the same time.Mr Lentz said that the floor-mat problem had caught Toyota off-guard because car owners had placed all-weather mats on top of the original carpet mats.Bob Waltz, head of product quality and service support, said that investigations into the defective pedals had been hampered because moisture that created the problem had often evaporated by the time vehicles were brought in to dealers.Mr Lentz declined to estimate the cost of the recalls and sales freeze. Toyota's US sales are expected to show a steep fall when carmakers report January sales today. The affected models make up for about 60 per cent of Toyota's US sales.Toyota shares gained 3 per cent in early trading in New York, after falling 15 per cent over the previous fortnight.www.ft.com/automobiles by Financial Times
